Takeuchi Seiho (1864-1942) was one of the leading figure of the Kyoto school of painting during the first half of the 20th century. He contributed greatly to the modernisation of Japanese painting and to the Nihonga style by incorporating Western techniques with the Kyoto style. In 1900, during the Exposition Universelle in Paris, he toured Europe to study Western art and became in 1909 a professor at the Kyoto Municipal College of Paintings. Later, some of his students established themselves as noted artists.
